We got up around 7 AM because we had a performance later at about ten. We went and ate breakfast at the Flame Tree and then went back to Fielding and Jacqueline’s living room and practiced for a little bit before we went to actually do our performances. A little before ten we went down to Youth to Youth. Our first group was specifically for the Coop Middle School and a few invited VIP’s, such as Senator Tomaki Juda, Jack Niedenthal, Jim Plasman and a few others. The performance went fairly well considering that it was for a group of easily distracted school kids. After our performance we handed out pins and pens to everyone and thanked them for coming. An elderly woman named Lily came up and personally thanked us and asked us to write our names down for her. Then Erica ran into another woman who greatly appreciated our performance and she gave me flower made from dried pandanus leaves, it was very generous of her. Between performances, we visited Jack Niedenthal at the Bikini Town Hall. Our second performance was at 6:00pm; this one was an open invitation to all community members. While Erica and I were practicing outside we met two teachers from Ejit Island, they were very nice people and they seemed genuinely interested in our project. Then we saw Scott Stege, who was a friend of Patty Schribers. He had seen the morning performance and gave us some advice. Then our time came and we went inside as Jacqueline and Mr. Fielding introduced us. This time the performance was a lot longer because Youth to Youth performed songs in between every drama piece. It was very difficult for me to concentrate during my speech because there was a bunch of little kids running in and out of the building being very loud and noisy. Jacqueline assures me that it went well. After everything was over we got up on stage and sang with Youth to Youth. They taught a song that they sang both in Marshallese and in English so that we could sing along as well. The nuclear club had attended this performance and they invited us out to dinner at the Marshall Islands Resort. Mary Silk, the head of the club, drove us down and introduced us to everyone in the club. Erica and I sat down at a table full of girls while Fielding and Jacqueline sat at the other table next to us. They ordered a bunch of pizza, which was very good. After dinner, we were all pretty tired and we went back to the Flame Tree. Erica and I sat in our room for a little while and we decided that it would be funny to practice the duo, but in reverse. So we went into the lounge between Jacqueline and Mr. Fielding’s room and performed for them, but we couldn’t stop laughing through the entire thing. We joked that we would perform like that at the high school the next day and Jacqueline said it would probably work if we could control our laughter. Then we went back to our rooms and went to bed.
My Journal
Scarred and spiral bound; decorated with great purple mountains and a clouded sky; bearing a single word "Vision".
Within it, coded memories of a three week adventure half-way across the globe are enscribed.
It is difficult to relay in text the interior of this record-keeper, which is laced with numerous hand-drawn maps, notes to self, and unexplainable doodles. I hope this blog sufficiently retells my experiences there and conveys the missions of our project, but more importantly, the inspiration.
